Why MD/PhD?

My research at Georgia Tech taught me to think critically as I studied the minutiae of embryonic development – peering at embryos each day whilst analyzing their gene expression. It was this acquisition of new knowledge and necessity to think critically that incited my passion for research. Combined with my commitment to serve and enjoyment in forming relationships with individuals, an MD/PhD is thus the perfect fit.

An MD/PhD is essential for me as I aspire to be a Research Physician and to conduct clinical research in my future career. I have conducted research with clinical applications in the fields of developmental biology as well as immunology, and I wish to continue implementing research into my medical career. A medical degree is necessary as it provides vital insight into clinical care and in combination with a PhD in biology would allow me to gain the skill set and training that would enable me to be a successful medical researcher. Analyzing the science and reasoning behind the medical decisions I have observed in shadowing was fascinating and provided me with a unique insight into the value of obtaining both degrees. As research and clinical care complement each other, I will be able to conduct research in a clinical setting that relates to human disease while also being able to effectively work with patients.

Being a Petit Undergraduate Research Scholar at Georgia Tech solidified my passion for research and propelled me on a path of continual interest in the pursuit of knowledge. That year of in depth independent research has served as an integral part of my college experience and fostered within me a true passion for biological research. Through direct mentoring by Dr. Shuyi Nie, I was able to understand the continuum of research from initial stages, to data collection, to developing my final paper. Being able to have this truly hands-on experience instilled within me a desire to incorporate research into my future career path and daily life.

In shadowing physicians and nurses, seeing the impact they made confirmed for me that caring for people in the role of the physician fits into how I want to care for people on that individual level. As the laboratory allows for a different kind of impact through researching cause of disease and therapeutic interventions, it is the perfect complement. I will be able to empathize with those afflicted through my role as a physician, and this will continually serve as a catalyst for my research interests as well.

In order to be fulfilled, I do need that zest of discovery and acquisition of knowledge. I love diving into a subject and immersing myself in it, and ultimately, an MD/PhD path would expand my horizons even further. Medicine and research are closely tied, and being able to comprehend scientific papers and contribute my own knowledge will allow me to both educate my patients and excel as a research physician.
